Avengers: Endgame marked the end of the Infinity War Saga, the apex of a 22-movie story arc the, and the conclusion of Marvel's Phase 3. Its worldwide release was on April 21st of this year, scoring a mind-blowing $2 billion in sales in under two weeks, and sales topped out at $2.76 billion, just $29 million shy of Avatar's record breaking sales.
A decade ago, James Cameron changed the world's cinematic experience entirely with the release of Avatar, and absolutely crushed worldwide screening to start its supreme reign as the best selling movie of all time with $2.79 billion in sales. It remained unmatched for a whole decade with an array of filmmakers reaching for the record. Well until this month.
The Russo Brothers' Avengers: Endgame officially broke the record with its re-release at the end of last month, accumulating a total of also $2.79 billion in sales (together with the initial release), but with a little over $500,000 more than Avatar. Co-Chairman and Chief Creative Officer of The Walt Disney Studios Alan Horn said in a statement,
"A huge congratulations to the Marvel Studios and Walt Disney Studios teams, and thank you to the fans around the world who lifted ‘Avengers: Endgame’ to these historic heights. Of course, even with the passage of a decade, the impact of James Cameron’s ‘Avatar’ remains as powerful as ever, and the astonishing achievements of both of these films are ongoing proof of the power of movies to move people and bring them together in a shared experience. The talented filmmakers behind these worlds have much more in store, and we look forward to the future of both the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Pandora."
Great success for both films and we sure hope to see more coming from them in the years to come.
