Doctor Strange 2: Is Stephen Strange The Villain In His Own Movie?

A spoiler-free discussion.

Multiverse of Madness

With the release of the new trailer for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, there were a ton of exciting moments to behold and easter eggs to drool over until the movie eventually releases next month. But one thing that seems to be a common theme in any Doctor Strange outing is that the Sorcerer Supreme himself is in the doghouse once again.

That is right, ladies and gentlemen. Doctor Strange is in trouble once more ostensibly for having purposed powerful magic in a manner that, according to the trailer, only caused more harm than good. As to what Doctor Strange did to cause such chaos, well, that remains a mystery for us to uncover once the movie is out. However, what we do get from the trailer is a soundbite of Strange explaining that he “did what he had to do to save” his world.

The short soundbite does make us wonder if it is in reference to Strange’s use of the time stone during the events of Avengers: Infinity War to view billions of alternate timelines in order to find the one that allowed the Avengers to eventually beat Thanos in Avengers: Endgame. This could be very possible in the likelihood that Strange was not just viewing alternate strategies to employ to defeat the Mad Titan but actually viewing the future of the multiverse to learn from the mistakes of other worlds and thereby ensure that his world would emerge victoriously.

Later, we are then shown a brief clip of what looks like an evil version of Doctor Strange, possibly a variation of the character Supreme Strange from Marvel’s What If…? Episode 4, whereby Strange misused magic in order to save the love of his life, Doctor Christine Palmer. It could very well be that this is merely another variant of Strange’s character that the “real” Strange encounters as a result of the breaking of the Multiverse, as we do not believe that the studio intends to cast Doctor Strange as the true villain in his own movie, rather only choosing to give audiences a glimpse of what could be possible if Strange is not kept under control.

The trailer also attempts to pit Wanda Maximoff against Doctor Strange as two powerful magic users in search of two opposing things. It is highly likely that Wanda will certainly be searching for her children after the events of WandaVision, and Strange could either be aiding her or completely against her use of dark magic to fabricate and bring to life the children that she had with Vision.

That being said, we would be lying if we denied how insanely cool the trailer was. As the title for the film so aptly describes, the trailer did share its “madness” with us as there is no way for us to confirm with absolute certainty as to how the movie will play out. We will just have to wait and see.
