Kenobi: Is The Trailer Teasing The Return Of A Certain Antagonist
A spoiler-free discussion.
Ewan McGregor reprises his role as Obi-Wan Kenobi
As of the time of writing, there have been two trailers that have dropped for the eponymous Obi-Wan Kenobi television series on Disney+. These trailers have indeed offered fans plenty of content and scenes to discuss about all over the internet. However, there is one portion that was presented in the teaser trailer which caught our attention and thus, warrants further discussion.
The point in question from the teaser trailer is the use of the epic Duel of the Fates track, which fans of the Star Wars mythology will associate with a certain final battle that took place in Star Wars, Episode I: The Phantom Menace. For those of you who are still unsure as to what we are referring to, this famous tune was played during the battle between the two Jedis, Qui-Gon Jinn, played by Liam Neeson, Obi-Wan Kenobi, played by Ewan McGregor, and the double-edged lightsaber wielding Sith apprentice, Darth Maul, played by Ray Park.
By the end of the battle, Qui-Gon Jinn is seen defeated by Maul, only for the Sith to then be subsequently defeated by Kenobi, who slices Maul across the abdomen and watches his dismembered body fall down a shaft.
Many fans were upset to see the end of what was to be known as one of the few highlights of the film, and recent retcons through the hit television show The Clone Wars and Solo: A Star Wars Story have shown the return of Darth Maul, having survived his previously believed death.
Therefore, if what we believe is true, the upcoming Obi-Wan Kenobi television series might just resurrect the famous Sith character for a rematch with his former nemesis. This would certainly be a sight to see, as the last time we witnessed the duo battle to the death was more than two decades ago. Perhaps Maul’s appearance in the Kenobi show could be the final battle that sees the Sith finally defeated by the now Jedi Master and thus wrap up that story arc in a true Duel of the Fates fashion.
However, we could certainly be wrong with our prediction about the return of Darth Maul, as there have been no other rumors or insider information that we can draw from to accurately tell you that we will indeed see the Sith character once more. Still, we believe that it would certainly be a missed opportunity on the part of the studio and the writing team to not include Darth Maul in the show, for it would undoubtedly be a memorable moment for the fans to witness this final duel taking place.
Whether or not this comes to pass remains to be seen, but we would surely hope that it materializes for our viewing pleasure.
