Slave I: Boba Fett’s Starship Has A New Name
Spoilers ahead for Star Wars-related content, in general.
A couple of months back, news broke that a new Lego playset featuring the iconic starship belonging to the infamous bounty hunter, Boba Fett, had been unceremoniously renamed to something as uninteresting as “Boba Fett’s Starship”.
As recent as a couple of days ago, news sources have confirmed that the ship was given yet another new name, Firespray, this time taking after the actual make and model of the designated starship, the Firespray-31-class attack and patrol craft.
While this sudden switch in moniker may appear unexceptional to the more casual fans of the Star Wars franchise, it has reportedly drawn the ire of the more seasoned, veteran followers of the bounty hunter.
Granted, within the context of the universe itself, a comprehensive explanation as to why the name should remain unchanged does not exist, save for it being the moniker ascribed to Boba Fett’s starship.
Setting this aside, it can be argued that, by altering the name of the ship to Firespray, it may serve only to diminish the personification of the bounty hunter’s character and what he stands to represent in the wider galaxy far, far away.
Boba Fett’s synonymous ties to Slave I is tantamount to his frightful presence and reputation as one of the Star Wars universe’s most feared bounty hunters, for he is the master of them all. It represents the character and how we have come to appreciate him over the decades since he was created, a principal figure in the mythology’s faction of scum and villainy.
Of course, when examining the starship’s name from the time it was first conceptualized, it would be safe to say that George Lucas had no profound rationale behind the naming of the ship, other than the fact that it most certainly sounded “cool” to him, much in the way Reel-2, Dialogue-2 was adopted as the name for the iconic astromech droid R2-D2.
But, perhaps, the name Firespray could ultimately grow on us over time, taking into account that the portrayal of Boba Fett in recent years has been that of an anti-hero and less of an antagonist.
Whether or not this approach succeeds, only the future can say.
