Princess Ariel or popularly known as the Little Mermaid is the beloved mermaid princess from Disney's 1989 film, The Little Mermaid. It is the story about the 16-year old mermaid princess who like most adolescent individuals of that age, is rebellious by nature and wishes to see more than what home has to offer.
She is the youngest of King Triton and Queen Athena's seven daughters, and is the main focus of the story because of her adventurous and kindred spirit. The royal mermaid family rule the kingdom of Atlantica, a Kingdom below the Atlantic ocean which is thought to be adapted from the legendary city of Atlantis. Ariel has always been curious and eager to know and understand more about life on land, and she eventually trades her voice for human legs to a sea witch, the antagonist character of the film, Ursula.
Ariel is seen throughout the film with her two animal buddies, a blue and yellow tropical fish named Flounder and a red crab named Sebastian. Flounder, much like Ariel, is young and has a knack for being wrongly adventurous, while although Flounder scares very easily, he stands by Ariel throughout the time that Ariel is at sea, even when she is in grave danger. Sebastian on the other hand is actually a music composer and loyal servant to King Triton, who doubles as Ariel's caretaker and friend.
Despite countless warnings from her parents, Ariel succumbs to her strong passion for exploration and befriends Prince Eric, whom she saves from a shipwreck. The heroic deed becomes her first contact with life on land, which led to the plot of her trading her voice for human legs, and then the romance between Prince Eric and herself. Ariel is extremely compassionate towards all living things and she is known to other sea creatures as a kind and loving character. Her kindness was what fueled her obsession to learn more about humans and their culture; humans were described as selfish and mean creatures by her father, to which Ariel disagreed and believed that they were not as evil as depicted.
Two more movies on The Little Mermaid were released more than ten years later, a sequel called The Little Mermaid II: Return to the Sea, and The Little Mermaid: Ariel's Beginning, which was a prequel movie . However, only the original film was widely popular and one song in particular was a fan-favorite, entitled "Part of Me". This is also the tune used for our Royal Selangor Disney Princesses Collectible, the Ariel Music Carousel.
